I have lately become obsessed with this song. I think it was popular in the late 1930s and/or early 40s.
Ann Sheridan is absolutely stunning in this video, and Humphrey Bogart looks very young and dashing.

On that topic, some stuff about the 'winter blues' has been going around. I've never really experienced this- i think because i'm pretty busy and hardly think about things like that. Sure i like it when the sun shines, but i also like stars and and cold and it doesnt seem like my mood is very contingent on the weather. However, have been distantly obsessed with a kind of part time, unrealistic, tropical dream. I want to go down south to, i dont know, Cuba or Mexico. Some tropical place like that. Tons of things deter me, hence the unrealistic part. Especially, especially because i want it to be like some 1940s movie. you know, i want to go there, but only if its like going there in the 40s. Thats how i picture it.
Strange i know, but a girl can dream.

I have also been working on some Mexican/southwestern inspired 40s pieces for summer (peasant blouse, circle skirt, etc.)

here are some inspiration photos i've dug up
Enjoy
I know you're going- "what?", but bear with me on this. This is an entirely personal decision in response to some strange things i've experienced and is not to persuade or enfluence anyone weather or
not to watch the show.

Its not that i dont like the show Downton Abbey. In fact, i think its pretty cool. What vintage nut wouldn't? Cool clothes, cool hair, beautiful ladies, cute guys, dramatic situations... etc. ( whoops, and let me clarify that you dont have to be a nut to like it.)

I've never been a faithful watcher. I first saw it near the end of Season 2 after we got a new antenna for our tv. Yes, our here in rural Kansas we were just recently able to get public television. (we still dont have cable, by the way, but thats another story. And i dont miss what I've never had, so its not that big of a deal.)
i was impressed and distantly anticipated the next season. I've never been caught up in TV show obsessions or anything like that. Anyway, this past January i saw something that reminded me of some things i'd rather not remember. It put this strange, murky feeling over the rest of the episode that continued into the night, and into the next day. It was one of those things that i couldn't shake off, like a ghost was following me around or something. I decided that my like for the show wasn't enough to have a funny feeling, so i kind of eased away and tried not to think about it. The show suddenly seemed kinda dark, sad and too much like a modern soap opera or something.
I know it sounds funny to let my emotions get in the way of a good tv show... goodness sake it sounds ridiculous now that i'm writing it out, but it was like ' eeh...' when it was over, turned of the tv, thought 'probly wont do this in a while' and that was that.

I have watched it a bit since then, but on occasion, even before i first saw Downton Abbey, i have been asked if i watch it because you know.. i like vintage. And folks obviously see that. and you know, Downton Abbey is kind of... vintage, antique-ie... or something.
you may like that, thats fine! I kind of like it to, but just because i wear vintage or personally sewn dresses and set my hair doesn't mean i'm addicted to it.

So there it is, why i don't watch Downton Abbey.
After being super busy for the last couple of weeks i finally made it online last week, but spent most of the day catching up with everyone. Folks have been posting like crazy!
here is one of my favorite Christmas movies. Its not as much of a staple for me as Its a Wonderful Life, but it comes very, very close.

If you want to know more about it, look it up, but after hearing that it has Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire in it. Of course, since you guys are vintage lovers, etc, i'm sure you know and love it.
So here it is, and here i am, wishing you a Merry Christmas with one of my favorite movies... isn't Youtube great? almost any movie, anytime.
~here it is

Figured i'd turn this post into a bit of a hair tutorial. One of my favorite movies is Babes on Broadway (1940) with Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. Judy Garland's hair has always been such an inspiration for me, and if you know your pin curling, the styles really aren't that hard to figure out. When i first got into vintage, i hardly ever did pin curls because they were just too hard for me at the time. Now that i have more experience with them, i do them almost every time i set my hair, which is all the time.
Here is just a side note, if you aren't really into pin curls, try them, but dont give up. There is a special trick to them that can never be explained. Each one of us does them just a little bit differently due to our hair thickness or type, and how well it holds curl... like i said, i cant really be explained. A flick of the wrist here, a twisting of the entire arm there, it really is an art, but it seems to be so much more authentic than rollers when doing specific looks.

IF YOU DONT HAVE BANGS: go ahead and try this. I saw a movie once where a lady didn't have a fringe, but pinned her hair right behind the wave, letting the rest fall to the side so that it was nice and fluffy around her face. It is possible, i just haven't tried it because i have bangs.

You can also do this with a Bettie bangs length!

The following set is a section off the top of about 11/2 to 2 inches thick and 4 to 5 inches across the forehead.
please remember that whichever side you part your hair on, the pin curls need to be stemming AWAY from the part. The back is probably just forward pin curls with a reverse row in the middle. Whatever you like is fine.
you can also place your finger right in the middle of the wave, place a pin right under your finger and allow the ends of hair to curl around and hide the pin, making a cute wave/curl. I know it looks like i've disappeared, but i'm still here, reading every one's blogs and stuff. But i've been super busy and its been hectic lately (I've also been having some fun) and i look up and, my word, its Monday again. Another week has passed by before i even realized it. also a week from my last post, which might be rude... (?). So i apologize for the looooong halts between posts, I'm working on it.

The dates are very messed up on the following pictures because i have been having some trouble with my camera, but here are a few pictures of what i did this weekend.

On Sunday, our family went on a small road/day trip after church. It was a little cool and windy (it froze the night before) but the sky was very blue and the grass is finally green again.

The funny thing about Kansas is that one week can be 90 degrees or more, and the next, we get our first hard freeze of the season. It was fun to wear socks with my Mary Janes nd a 1940s sweater though.

I got tons of pictures, but some of the good ones (like a WW2 airplane and neat old houses and barns) didn't upload right, so this is just a taste.

Of course they don't do justice, because everywhere we looked it was nothing but rolling hills and wind turbines that looked like they were touching the sky.

Saturday was very cold and windy, they sky was covered with clouds and so i didn't do a whole lot but watch a couple movies and eat some chili. I love Judy Garland's lte 30s early 40s movies, particularly the ones with Mickey Rooney.

I am in love with Judy's hair.

Very feminine and iconic of the war-time era.

Take a look-

The crocheted kimono i made and my modernish cotton one, though cute and purposeful, just don't come to the bar, so to speak. So what's a girl to do?
Why, sew one of course!

Look at the Butterick pattern i found online after only a few minutes of searching. Not only can I buy it brand-new, but i can make it with long or short sleeves!
I think it's very elegant. I cannot wait to pick up the pattern and get to work on a long sleeved one for fall/winter.

I am really liking the flowered fabric the left robe is made of

I think it's my new obsession!

(?)

Three adorable little newsreels from 1939 with the cute, young Judy Garland and the hilarious Mickey Rooney~

After seeing that Vouge patterns were on sale at our local fabric store, i decided to look them up to see if they had any 'new' (reproduction) vintage ones.

Do they ever!

Not only that, but the biggest selection i have ever seen!

CLICK HERE to go to the Vintage Vouge homepage.

They have everything from sundresses to wedding dresses, from suits to coats and even a few hat patterns!

They are all from the 1930s thru the 50s and two 60s patterns.

All you have to do is click on one and it tells you the price, sewing level and whatever drawings and fabric suggestions, notions and etc. that you would see on the back of the pattern.

I cant wait to go to the store!

This 1938 ensemble is definatley one of my favorites. I have lots of 50s and 60s dresses i've found at thrift stores and the like, but do not own any 30s stuff, save family photos. Why not make a bunch in whatever colors i like?

I also CANNOT RESIST this 1947 suit. I think it looks very much like the suit Allie Fortune wears on the cover of the book Miss Fortune (by Sara Mills).
I love it!
Ok, those two are my favorite, but who doesnt love 1940s A-line dresses? The only down side to this one is that its at an advanced sewing level :(
I apologize that i haven't made a post since spring. There was just so much going on that i felt like i didn't have the time it takes to make a proper post.
Thanks to all the wonderful folks that have followed me since then and the ones who havent booted me off their reading list!
I don't know about you, but summer has been crazy with lots of ups and downs and maybe a little tragedy thrown in. So while i have a few minutes, i wanted to post this cute little Shirley Temple song, appropriately titled: Be Optimistic!
It feels good to be blogging again, (like a strange, yet easygoing kind of therapy) so i WILL post soon!
Love ya'll!
I get on stuck on doing different styles and methods over and over until i get it perfect, and then it looses its mystery now that i know how to do it and i move on to something different. I do have to admit though, that for about the 3 months after i got addicted to vintage, i hated the pin curl. Yes, that's right. It was hard and frustrating. Now i love it. i got practice by doing the little strands at the nape of my neck to get a longer lasting, sturdier curl back there and also when i got it cut, they were too short to curl tightly around any rollers. So here i am, officially a pin curl addict!
I came across some AWESOME setting patterns on the web yesterday. I was on the computer almost all day, (just addicted really) and I have narrowed it down to my favorite diagrams.

~This authentic Lauren Bacall setting pattern is from a blog, but i cannot find it! Please contact me if you have any information so i can rightfully link to it.
I really like this. Very fast, simple, smooth and easy! Oh yes, and so old Hollywood!

~ This is also an set pattern from the 40s. I like this one (i did it last night) because it says that it looks good on girls with long faces (like me). It made my eye length modern bangs look like an honest to goodness retro fringe, although i prefer to do it with a flat iron because my pin curls were not consistent in size. I also ALWAYS add more curls to the back because i have pretty thick hair and i just like some more in the back. And you cannot from the picture, but there are two wonderful pin curl waves. (one on each side because the two top rows on side curl forward and bottom row aims away from face. I sport them right now as i type!)

~This Glamorous style is much like the picture below. I cant wait to try it! I just LOVE pin curl waves. It will take a little work and a little gel to get my bangs to stay back but i think i can pull it off!

Here we go! Starting off the wonderful week with (drum roll, please) one of my infamous Favorite Vintage Crochet Pattern posts!

Came across this one a while back and fell in love. Its an original pattern from 1935! Back in those days (Great Depression) women made old dresses new again or dressed up an every day one with handmade collars and cuffs (sewed, crocheted, knitted, etc.). I love this because my Grandma Mae swore upon the saying "use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without!" She grew up in eastern Colorado (dust bowl country!) during the 30s and loved anyone who was resourceful and hated anyone who wasn't. I've always had some of that mentality from her teachings which i part of why i love it.

Another reason why i am so in love with it is that it appears to be VERY similar to the collar on Ginger Rogers dress in Swing Time (1936) when she dances with Fred does it not?

Hey y'all! Sorry i haven't been posting as usual. I've been terribly busy with my Victory Garden and sewing and crocheting for upcoming events.

This morning i wanted to do a little apron post just because i love aprons. Who doesn't? I've recently become addicted to them and thought i would post some pretty pictures and patterns of vintage aprons.
I love to sew them. Not only are do they serve a wonderful purpose (for i am quite messy in the kitchen) but they are SUPER cute. I usually wear a half apron when cleaning around the house, a full apron for cooking and baking (for obvious reasons) and when one of those gets old and worn out, I put them out in the barn/shed for gardening and yard work.

Here's a tip, even if you haven't mad the apron yourself, you can still put your own mark on it. Dressing it up with rick rack, piping, harmonizing colors of bias tape or lace can revive an old apron and give it a vintage feel.

Here are some of my favorite pictures of vintage aprons.

I dont know about you, but i LOVE cake plates. No, not the little plates that come in your dishes set, i talking the real- um, ok, some call them cake 'stands'?

I was recently at an antique store in Winfield, Kansas ( i'm not saying the name because i cannot remember it and i didnt buy anything there) where in one of the rooms she had a great big dining room table FULL, i talkin' COVERED with cake plates. Light green, pale blue and pink, nontransparent glass and simple, smooth, beautiful stands.

I have two of my own that i've picked up at estate sales so that inspired me to bake a cake yesterday. Maybe i should post my recipe? Anyway, the cake looks great on the plate so i thought that if you did not have a cake plate, you need to get one! Here are some of my favorite pictures i found while looking around the web because i love them so much and i couldnt resist.

Here it is! The cutest, easiest little snood pattern of all time.
Using a yarn color similar to your hair color is more conservative but feel free to use what ever you would like. Personally, I've had my eye on a yellow, red and orange blend of yarn that i just might have to try. And remember that you can substitute the 4-ply wool and size 3 hook for any other kind of yarn or hook as long as your gauge is the same.
Original 1942 pattern from
Today i thought I'd go with a little snood inspiration. My hair is more of bandanna length for working but I'm still addicted to snoods.
*Be sure to check out my 'Victory Rolls and Victory Gardens' post on my other blog; Outside My Window by clicking HERE!

I have a wonderful, easy crochet pattern coming up so i thought i get everybody ready for it with a little inspiration. ( i know I'm probably driving everyone crazy with the crochet patterns but i just can't resist!) So here it is. Its also a little bit of a cop-out because Ive been working a lot in my Victory Garden and i need to post something really fast but i love snoods. Talk about an easy way to go 1940s!
(no, this is not a sponsored post, just an example of what i like and love and call my own.)

Good Morning and Happy Monday! I trust that you are having a wonderful Monday for a wonderful week.
Today i wanted to do another one of these 'What's On My Bookshelf' posts because i read a wonderful book last Friday. Really, i read it in one day. I couldn't put it down it was so good.

Dear Enemy by: Jack Cavanaugh, published by Bethany House Publishers, copy write 2005.
Here is the description from the back of the book:
"Nurse Anne Mitchell, after seeing firsthand the atrocities of war, has concluded, along with most of her fellow Americans, that the enemy is inhuman and thoroughly depraved. But when a rouge rescue mission ends in tragedy, a bereft Annie finds herself in the middle of Belgium's Ardennes Forest, behind enemy lines- and captured. What transpires in the bitter cold of the following days, however, is impossible for Annie to reconcile with er preconceived ideas about the enemy. Her captor, Karl Hausmann, doesn't fit the stereotype she has embraced- and the encounter changes everything for her. Tested by prejudice and the separation of time and continents, Anne must build on the awakening if life and love are ever to hold any true meaning for her again. Dear Enemy is the story of heroic love, faith, and the unexpected, emerging in the wake of one of WWII's most fierce and bloody battles- the Battle of the Bulge."

I have to say that i truly love this book and that i will be reading again. I read a lot, all the time. I go to a couple different libraries a couple times a month and I love it. I enjoy a lot of books but there are few that i really really love and get into like i did this one.

This book made me laugh out loud at times. I really loved all of the characters and Cavanaugh made me feel like i knew each one, they were colorful, hilarious, shady, people i loved from the start and people that made honest to goodness shivers run down my spine. The wit and humor was masterful and crazy (in a way that i love because i could never in a thousand years think of it myself).

It was dramatic. My emotions were on edge, the situations were tense and real. Cavanaugh is truly blessed with his writing talent and the way he can weave words so that you really feel the fear, humor, anticipation, eagerness or whatever it may be. I really got into this story, it was historically, time-period and geographically accurate. He takes the story smoothly from one surprise to another. There were so many unexpected happenings~

Another thing is that it is refreshing to read male authors. Their writing style IS different from female authors, but sometimes they skip some 'important' things and leave us gals wondering. Not here. All of my questions were answered leaving just enough to the imagination of the reader.

I think that's enough for now, so I'll close by saying that i will totally recommend this book to anyone, especially for people who love WWII, history and stories with just that perfect touch of romance!Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10940320260094301593noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6234553093140977431.post-58839641081612516962012-04-20T09:59:00.003-05:002012-09-14T15:54:46.741-05:00Free Vintage Crochet Pattern: 1940s Springtime BlossomsHere it is! This bag is made to match the Springtime hat in yesterday's post. Its cute and so retro!

The only problem i had with this was that you need a bag bottom for, well, the bottom of the bag. I just used a very small crochet hook with the regular belstraw art (i used smaller hook so stitches would be tighter and sturdier) and just crocheted until i got the size i wanted and then sewed cloth to the inside. You can do what ever you want or you can to to the Free Vintage Crochet website where they have a bunch a crochet bag patterns or theAntique Crochet Patterns website (where i got this pattern) for more. Oh yea, and if you're a knitter, be sure to check out Free Vintage Knitting website.

Have fun crocheting!!!
Ok then, we'll try this again. Something happened and now i have to start over (oh well!).

Good mornin', good mornin'! I hope you enjoyed that peppy little song the other day. But now its time to move on with one of my favorite crochet patterns in my favorite department, hats!
I found this the other day on the web and realized just how much i need a good spring hat. I saw it and just fell in love with it. The bag pattern will be coming tomorrow, so stay tuned.
I found it onAntique Crochet Patterns (.com). They do have some different stuff on there than Freevintagecrochet.com like a suit pattern! I just might have to try that some time!
Anyway, here it is, enjoy:
